happy birthday matty!

I just wanted to take a moment and send out a special Happy Birthday to my fabulous husband!! You make me the happiest woman in the world. You are my best friend and my partner in crime. I love you more and more each day and I could not imagine my life without you in it. I cannot wait for you to come home to me and Mr H. I love you. Stay safe out there. I will see you before you know it!

homemade chalkboard

The other day when I was out for a run I noticed this quaint little house with a festive red door. And on the front door was a little chalkboard that said "welcome". I thought it was so cute! I could picture one on our front door now....I could write "Welcome Home Matty" (when Matt finally gets home), or "have a great day" or "I love you" or anything I want. I decided I needed to get myself a front door chalkboard immediately. But you want to know how much something like that costs? Let me just say it was not as cheap as I was hoping, plus shipping, etc. So I decided I would make my own chalkboard! That's right, make one.

I drove myself over to BBB and picked up a sign in the shape I liked and sanded it down (well I made my Mom sand it down. Thanks Mom!):

Then I went to Home Depot and picked up a can of chalkboard paint and spray painted it. It was also my first time using spray paint (had to read the instructions)!

Ryan: "no sissy, please don't paint me"
all done! Time for it to dry

After letting it dry for 24 hours, then shading it with chalk, then erasing it, it was ready for use! Yay! I got some festive colored chalk from Michael's for super cheap and ta-da...
my new front door welcome sign!

I think it looks fabulous! Plus, it was super easy and costs less than $10. If you have kids, this could be a great little art project to do together. You could also get one with a frame and paint the frame too. Happy painting everyone!

i love you because....

Today is all about Matt! Here are 10 things I love about Matt...

1. I love that you make sacrifices for our future without complaining. I know you don't always love your job, but you do it for us and for all the things we want to accomplish in life. Thank you.

2. I love how you have so many dreams and goals. They can be different from day to day and be anything from you wanting to be a swim coach, to us eventually getting an RV, but it shows me how excited and passionate you are about life.

3. I love that you love music. All sorts of music. You have exposed me to so much! (and I've even tortured you with some NSYNC!) I love that we can enjoy it together, whether at a concert, or at home over dinner.

4. I love that we can enjoy so many outdoor activities together! From white water rafting, to bungee jumping, to scuba diving, we get to experience life and all these adventures side by side.

5. I love how you look in your uniform. Especially the khaki's. What? I had to throw it's true!!

6. I love the way you treat me. You make me feel so special and so loved each and every day. You know exactly what to do or say exactly when I need it.

7. I love how supportive you are. Whether I want to be a stay at home mom, work part time, or work full time, I know you will be there, supporting me no matter what. You want me to be happy and knowing you are encouraging me and that you believe in me, makes me the happiest girl on earth.

8. I love that you are so patient and understanding. I know you are going to be a great Dad. I can see you taking them to the park to play catch, teaching them to ride a bike, listening to them when they have a complaint, and loving them beyond words.

9. I love when you sing in the shower or play me a song on the guitar. You are so talented and so creative. I hope our kids get some of that musical ability from you (Lord knows I have none). We can have our own little band. :)

10. I love how ambitious you are. Whether it's with your job, our trip to New Zealand, or about having kids. You don't just let things happen to you, you make them happen. You put in the time and energy so we can be knowledgeable and prepared. You make sure we have the best experience/outcome possible.

Bonus #11: I love your cuddle skills! Super good cuddler! Can't wait for lots of those when you get home! :)

Love you baby!!

i love you because...

If you were to complete the phrase, "I love you because"... what would you say?

Last week I gave Matt and myself some homework...put together a list of 10 things you love about the other person. Not just "smart, beautiful", but something quirky or unique that makes them special. You gotta dig deep! I think it is very important to do something like this. It makes you appreciate your spouse for who they are, and it will make you feel very special and loved when you read all the nice things they wrote about you.

Today is all about me (don't worry, tomorrow will be all about Matt). Here is the list of 10 things Matt loves about me:

1. I love that we have the same life goals and want to do the same stuff when we get older; it makes it easier to visualize our future together.

2. I love how thoughtful you are when it comes to making me feel like you care when you give cards or gifts; you just seem to know exactly what to say.

3. I love how supportive you are with my career and how flexible you have been with moving and changing jobs and stuff. It lets me know that you really care about the success and well being of our family.

4. I love that you take such great care of Harley; it lets me know you will be a good Mom.

5. I love the fact that we like to do the same activities and that you aren't afraid to try new things. I'm so proud of how good of a skier you have become!

6. I love that you are just as comfortable drinking a beer in jeans and a t-shirt as you are drinking champagne while wearing a dress, high-heels, and jewelry. I feel like we can fit in anywhere together. You do a great job adjusting to any situation!

7. I love that you are crafty. You always seem to have something cool that you are working on to create. From scrap books, to Christmas wreaths, to cake jars, to recipe books. I'm sure you will be a great birthday party activity planner for our kids when they get older!

8. I love how good of a cook and baker you have become. When we first got together I was a little worried about this one, but you definitely proved me wrong. You have become an awesome cook and I look forward to more of your recipes in the years to come!

9. I love that you work out. I feel like we have a whole new world of working out to discover together. I want to do more of this when I get home. It's great that you are getting into running. It will be another activity we can do together as a couple.

10. I love that you are stylish. I am always jealous of how great you look when we leave the house. I can't compete. You have cool work clothes that make you look hot too.

Good job Matty!! I am actually a little jealous I didn't think of a few of these first (dang it). And I'm sure it wouldn't be fair to copy. hmmm...what do I love about Matt??! Let me count the ways...

keep reading...tomorrow is Matt's day. :)

weekend highlight: mom & the pups come out to play!

It sure was a beach filled weekend for me! Mom and the pups came down for a visit, meaning each and every day revolved around dog beach. And boy was Harley sooooo excited about that! We went every single day they were here. I thought that by the end of the weekend, after 3 days at the beach, Harley's manners would be better...nope. He was still a crazy, out of control, bossy fool. But he had a great time. In fact, we all did:

Jack and Ryan
Harley, acting a fool

swim time
handsome boys

It was great to spend some quality time with Mom and the boys. I know Harley enjoyed seeing his Uncle Jack and Uncle Ryan too. Besides the beach we also enjoyed some family dinners, lunch outdoors with all the dogs, a pedicure, and lots of couch cuddles. It was a pretty relaxing and fun weekend. Ok, time to go vacuum and clean up all the golden hair and sand.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

cuteness friday

I stumbled upon this bookmark when I was going through some books at home. It's from my Grandma, and just her style. I love it. It made me smile....

 super cute front
the back, always date everything! :)

This is now my favorite bookmark to use. And since Matt has my kindle, it is coming in super handy lately! Thanks Grandma! :)

And a picture of Mr H just because....

Happy Friday everyone!!!

me...on the go

Yesterday Matt FINALLY got my care package I mailed off on May 11! I guess they just couldn't get all the mail on one flight, and it kept getting delayed and delayed. But it finally arrived. And I think I was more excited than him. I had sent a lot of the usual stuff: magazines, food, little random gifts I happened to find, but this time I also added in a little something special:

Flat Shannon!!!

a picture of the cute couple. LOL!

After having a ton of fun with flat Matt, I figured Matt needed one of me. I mean, who doesn't? I think he was definitely surprised and excited to see it. Now I can join him on the ship and on land. I can't wait to see all the adventures flat Shannon gets to go on. Take lots of pictures babe!

more than just a snuggle buddy

Mr H is also good for your health! :)

I recently read an article on CNN about how a baby's first pet may protect against allergies. Children were less likely to have allergies (especially to animals) if they had a pet in the house during their first year of life. Well that's great news! I am sure that genes also play a role, but I am all for having pets, even with a small child in the house. I really think it adds to the household and kids learn to take care of the animal, pet it, love it, etc. And to think there is also an added health benefit...bonus!

I always had pets growing up, at one point we had 3 dogs and 4 cats. We also had a guinea pig, hermit crabs, lizards, and snakes. Jeez talk about a zoo! But it was so much fun! I could not imagine my life without a pet in it. The decision to get Harley was the best decision we made. He loves us no matter what, listens to us quietly without interrupting, snuggles like you wouldn't believe, and has helped prepare us for kids (we can't leave last minute anymore). Pets are also great for reducing stress and anxiety. Harley works with disabled adults, allowing them to pet him and play with him as a distraction. The adults become calmer and more well behaved, and Harley learns patience. He is so great with allowing people to pull his ears, lips, etc that I know he is going to be a fabulous big brother. In fact, I took him to the ship's half way party for the kids this last weekend, and he was so calm and relaxed with the kids (and there was a lot going on). He had a great time! His only downfall: trying to convince the kids to give him yummies....and that was not hard to do:

Harley being hugged by 2 cute little girls...and eyeballing
the snow cone at the same time. Priorities. :)

If you don't have a pet, get one! Any kind you want! You will definitely not regret it and your life will be changed, for the better.

the simple things

Last night as I was laying in bed, reading my book I thought to myself "I really miss the late night chats Matt and I used to have". After crawling into bed, we would just chit chat about anything and everything. It was quiet and peaceful and just us. A simple thing. A simple joy.

There are a lot of things like that that I miss. Matt and I cuddling on the same couch, then Harley jumping up trying to get in on the action too. Cooking dinner together. Getting a morning goodbye kiss as Matt leaves for work, then adding in a nice little butt squeeze and a "babe you look hot in that uniform". Going for a run together and not talking, just enjoying each others company. Running errands together on the weekend. Enjoying a glass of wine and a chat over dinner.

But those are also things I look forward to enjoying again very soon. And I am thankful for deployment for that reason. It made me really appreciate the simple things in life. It isn't always about big trips, fancy cars, or large homes. It's a good glass of wine. Clean sheets. A great pair of slippers. A warm cup of coffee on a brisk morning. The real joys in life and in marriage come from the small moments you share together. If you have those and you appreciate those, I really believe you will have a good strong relationship.

moving right along

Just a quick post to say how super excited I am to be 60% done with deployment! Hell to the yes!

For a while time was crawling, it was painful, and I thought the summer would feel never ending. But it has finally started to pick up some speed. And since I am super busy in the coming weeks and months I am hoping the trend continues. Poor Matty has been stuck on the ship without port visits, so things are not so fast for him. But in a few weeks they will finally start to make some stops and hopefully that will help break up the remaining time we have left.

Stay strong baby! We can do it!

peachy amaziness

After putting away the groceries on Saturday I noticed a lot of canned fruit in our cabinet. Three cans of peaches to be exact. And we don't really eat canned fruit. Not sure how we acquired these. Since we didn't want them to go to waste, we contemplated how to use them and we found this amazing recipe:

Peachy Avocado Salsa:

  • 1 (15 ounce) can sliced peaches, drained and diced

  • 1 medium ripe avocado, diced

  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

  • 2 cups diced, seeded tomato

  • 1/4 cup diced onion

  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro or parsley

  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon seeded chopped jalapeno pepper*

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • In a bowl, combine the peaches, avocado and lime juice. Add the remaining ingredients; lightly toss just until combined. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

It was amazing!! We made chicken fajitas and topped them off with this yummy salsa! It would also be great with fish too, maybe Mahi Mahi. mmmm. Perfect way to use up some of the canned peaches!

    happy birthday!

Yesterday was a fabulous day, it was Mom and Jim's birthday!! Yay!! Two very awesome people that I love a lot.

Mom ~ I think the card I sent you really said it all. (I think it might even deserve a frame!) You are a great Mom and friend. I am blessed to have you in my life. You have always been there for me, supporting me, and loving me no matter what. You have allowed me to make my own choices, but have always been there in the sidelines waiting just in case I needed a hand. You have helped make me the woman I am today. Thank you for being you. I hope I will be as great of a Mom as you are. I look forward to our relationship growing and changing as our lives do. I hope you had a great birthday! I love you!!

Jim ~ All my life I have wanted a cool older brother. Someone to laugh with, get advice from and look up to. I am so happy to have found those things in you! You are such a funny, smart and kind person. You are always the life of the party (in a good way) and I love spending time with you. I wish we lived closer so we could hang out even more. I miss our First 48 and Deadliest Catch Days! :) Thanks for always beings so accepting and kind to me. I love you lots! Happy Birthday!

    welcome to the family

Everyone, I would like to introduce you to the newest member of the Hall family:

Isn't he just the cutest? He's single ladies (wink wink)! If you are in the San Diego area and interested, please shoot me an email. :) Ok, enough of the online matchmaker business....

We recently adopted Nicolas after putting him through a brutal screening process involving bars, wine, and lots of food. After a brief mishap in OB (involving a porta potty and the police) we thought we would have to let him go, but he convinced us to let him stay. We figured everyone needed a second chance. We all make mistakes and well, he was growing on us. So today we are making it official, Sara and I have a brother! yay!!

Nicolas, welcome to the family! Matty is going to love you!! And Mom too! We always wanted a brother to hang out with and tease and make fun of. You are going to love being a Hall! And remember: no secrets! ;)

fly it high, fly it with pride

As I was driving around this weekend I absolutely loved seeing all the American flags flying high. It seemed like everyone in my neighborhood put one out for Memorial Day. It is inspiring and moving. I love it.

But why is it that as soon as the holiday is over the flag is taken down? Why do people only put it out on certain holidays and leave the flag pole bare the rest of the year? Are they afraid it will get ruined? Are we scared to show our patriotism? Where is the American pride?

Normally I avoid hot button issues and prefer not to be political on the blog, but this really irks me. When you go to Mexico, what is the first thing you see? The biggest Mexican flag in the world. Seriously. They are proud of who they are and proud of their country. I want to see some of that spirit here. If you don't have a flag pole I encourage you to go out and buy one. A flag will cost you less than $40.

At the Clute household, we fly our flag 24/7. It does not come down if its windy, or rainy or if its Christmas. I am proud to be an American, proud to be a Navy wife, and damn proud to fly the flag. I just wish other people would do the same.

"I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free....and I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me...."

Fly it high, fly it with pride. we do.
